Eastern Kingsnake - Initial feedings. . . New Ideas???

BlueKing May 17, 2004 11:20 PM

Hi there! Just wanted to toss this one out here about initial feedings for baby 'easterns'. I have been overseas for the last three breeding seasons, but now I am back breeding eastern Kings. We all know that some of the babies can be picky eaters at first. And yes, I've tried the lizard/snake scenting on the pinkie trick - which works. I have also tried the split pinkie head/brain thing, which worked very well by the way. But since I've been out of the "loop" sort to speak for the last three breeding seasons, I was just wondering if anyone else has got any new ideas on how to get stubborn easterns to eat when they're still young and picky! I thought I'd ask early BEFORE I have my eggs hatch (which is still a long time away). I figure this would be a good time to share our knowledge and hope others will read this post as well - maybe they can save some trouble too. . . .

NEVER too old to learn!

Thanks guys/gals!!!

Zee

Hey Zee

Last year my baby NJ Easterns were a pain in the a$$ ! Everyone of them refused pinks frozen or alive and they didnt like scented pinks either. What I did for the ones I kept (I sold the others as non feeders} was to wrap a piece of snake skin around the head of a pink. It worked like a charm ! Although one snake would eat the skin right off and leave the pink lol. I would cut a section of snake and cut the meat out leaving a ring of snake skin. I would put the snake skin "mask" if you will over the pinkies head. Yes its a little Hannibal Lechterish but it works... at least for mine.
