thawing rodents?????

mbleek448 May 17, 2004 11:31 PM

What is the best way to unfreeze rodents? Should you let them sit over night and let the air do all the work or is soaking them in hot water better? Does either way work? I'm just looking for a healthier way of doing it. Thanks Marshall

I just use warm water...small rats don't take long at all...large, I get them started before I do to work and they are usually ready when I get home.

Well Steve and I take them out the morning of feed day and place them on a plate in the fridge while we are gone all day and school and work and then when we get home we remove the rats from the fridge and place them in the snake room to warm them up and make sur ethe job is done for an hour or two and then its off to feeding with no heating up anymore. Anyways!!! Good luck with all your feedings!

Sincerely,

in my garage for 3 hours or so, depending on the temperature, then I soak then for 10 minutes in hot water FROM THE FAUCET (about 120 degrees.) by the time I drain the water and carry the rat to the cage the surface temp of the rat is around 100 degrees (I have an infared temp gauge-Sears 50 bucks.) My two boas have never regurged, and the rat barely hits the floor when I toss it in. The reason I leave then in a plastic bag is so flies won't lay their eggs on them. Probably not a big deal but it grosses me out thinkin' about it.

I have always thawed my rats and mice by just soaking in hot water for about an hour and then feeding. I figured the extra water on the rat would be benificial. Is there something wrong with this practice? Thanks. Andy
