First successful captive breeding of gilas

Carmichael May 18, 2004 07:15 AM

A beautiful male gila obtained from Dr. Seward and a unique, peach headed female obtained from Hank Molt, finally bred and our little girl just deposited two seemingly perfect eggs yesterday (small clutch but this is a small adult female that in hindsight, should have waited one more year before being bred). They are set up in the incubator at 82 deg F. and time will only tell just how successful we were. Any tips? My breeding efforts focus mostly on Eastern Indigo Snakes and Eastern Massasaugas so this is something new (and exciting). Cheers, Rob

Way to go Rob!

Now I do expect an email letting me know when they hatch. Baby gilas have GOT To be far more adorable than the adults. Then again ya never know. I may be passing thru on a drop off.

Thanks Cindy, personally, I think the adults have the cutest reptilian faces on earth...the thought of having baby gilas is something that would be a lifelong dream come to fruition. Stop on by any time. Rob

Congratulations Rob! Great job.

Can you tell if they are fertile and if the embryos are growing?

Thanks Mark, by all indications and using the excellent information in your gila monster book, they appear to be doing great. But, like eastern indigo eggs that I work with, the 100 days of incubation is a real strain on my patience and stress level. So, we'll just see what happens. So far, I have been able to provide a stable environment for the eggs. If these eggs hatch, the babies should be breathtaking. I'll keep you posted. Rob

that would be fantastic if you hatch these eggs out!

Gilas are certainly one of the more difficult eggs to hatch, but you will be THRILLED the day they slit out

i'm excited for you man, way to go, and best of luck for the rest of the adventure!

Thanks Robyn, it is funny, I have so much confidence working with so many reptiles (in terms of hatching them out) but this is unchartered territory for me. I have a feeling it is going to take a few tries to gain confidence working with this lizard...but well worth the effort. I will keep everyone posted. How's your gila breeding going?
