I have bought my son a curly tailed lizard and he phoned me at work today and said he was trying to get the lizard out and the tail came off!
Is the normal?

That means he scared the lizard and it dropped its tail as a defense. It should grow back. In the meantime, work on not scaring the lizard so much, I guess, or it will just lose its tail again.
It got excited/scared/stressed. Provide the animal with plenty of vitamins when feeding to help the tail grow back. Also, these lizards can be kind of feisty and most are wc and are not the most happiest to be held. Just enjoy it behavior behind the glass, sometimes its better that way for both you and the animal.

I worked with a curly tailed that lost his tail (due to careless handling) it does seem to be growing back, but it's doing so VERY slowly, much more slowly than a gecko. i've got this one on a slightly elevated vitamin regimen. be carefull about using too many vitamins. vitamin A toxicity is very common in reptiles, so be careful with you dosage and which vitamins you use. i would suggest also using a probiotic supplement, such as one marketed by nature zone: "Essential Probiotics"
