UNION DEMOCRAT (Sonora, California) 17 May 04 Frog jump was more than met the eye (Mike Morris)
What do the Calaveras County Fair, Wal-Mart and frog urine have in common?
More than you might think, says Adel Ibrahim, an eye doctor at Sonora's Wal-Mart.
While working Saturday afternoon, Ibrahim said a woman in her 30s from Southern California came into his office with an unusual problem.
"She said when she was handed a frog it sprayed her in the eye," the optometrist said of his patient, a Jumping Frog Jubilee competitor.
Ibrahim said the woman flushed the frog urine from her eyes on Friday, shortly after being sprayed. But the bacteria caused her eye to become inflamed and infected, he said.
"Pus was oozing out so I prescribed her antibiotics," Ibrahim said.
The doctor, who moved to the foothills four years ago, joked that he probably wouldn't have encountered this had he stayed in his hometown, on New York's Long Island.
"It was definitely a learning experience for me," he said with a laugh.
