I currently live near Huntington, WV. I am finishing up with school and might be offered a job in Naples, FL. Are there any Floridians that could give me a heads up on what to expect living in Florida? My fear is hurricanes and fire ants and crime. Huntington has a lot of crime so I don't think it will be any worse. It actually could be much better. Are there any good places to herp in that area?

Thanks,
Dan

Actually Dan,Collier county is a unique area of Florida. It is located on the western edge of the Everglades. The area provides several different eco-sytems and micro habitats, from sand pine scrub to hardwood swamp. Geologically there is a pinacle rock ridge that extends from Homestead, Fl in the east to Ochopee in the west. Along this ridge can be found true "L.g.brooksi". Off route 29 is the Faxahatchie Strand. Collecting is prohibited, but if it's photos or just observing, you can find Drymarchon, Crotalus, Lampropeltis, Micrurus, Elaphe, Agkistrodon, Fl. Panther as well as Black Bear among others.
I grew up in South Fla and have many great memories of stomping around this area. Good luck and hope you make memories too.
Feel free to email me if you would like further info on the area.
Bob
