Cricket Strike!!!

dmz May 18, 2004 12:29 PM

Hello!
This is my first post to this forum, so greetings to all! We've had Cash for nearly one year, his age is probobly 1 1/2 to 2 years old. When we first got him he nearly tripled in size because we were feeding him properly. Before he went into brumation, he could put away 12-15 crickets a day, more if I would let him. He did well with his greens too. Brumation started in January and didn't end until approx. mid-April. Since waking, he has shown little to no interest in crickets, prefering to only eat superworms.
I really want him to eat crickets again as I buy in bulk to feed the rest of our reptiles. Anyone ever had a similar problem or can offer me a solution? Any advice would be helpful. Also, he has been climbing like mad! He has a large enclosure, so will this behavior taper down as gets older?
Thanks much--
Diane

It's pretty common for males to go on a hunger strike after brumation. They will hardly touch their greens and only eat crickets depending on their moods. I've never had a problem with them eating supers though. Make sure he's not getting too many of those for his main diet. You need to try and get him to ingest as much supplementation as possible. Try dusting his crickets with T-rex dragon dust so he's getting plenty of proteins. If you do start using the T-rex just don't give him vitamins or calcium in addition to that. He has only one thing on his mind right now and until he gets his share of the ladies doesn't want to think about eating. Make sure to supplement what he does eat and he will eventually come around.
