egg question

cmsuphoto May 18, 2004 09:33 PM

Been breeding the last three years, and I ran into something I've never seen in the last clutch. Few things actually. First off, the female, during laying, unhinged her jaw. This normal? Wasn't anything worrisome, because she put it back together when she was done, it just made her look dead (which she is not) and that worried me.

Second, two of the eggs appear fertile, but are noticably smaller than all the other eggs. They appear fertile, nice and white, just smaller. Any thoughts?

Last one, I also saw eggs that looked half fertile, half good. It's wierd. Are these good eggs that will just "mature" into good eggs? Is it dead? Basically, it looks like pure white eggs over 80% of the egg, but one end is brown. I'll post pics as soon as I can.

Any help you can give would help out a lot! Thanks.

Don’t have many answers for the first question with the unhinged jaw, I don’t watch my snakes lay their eggs, I just give them space until they are done….
The second one with the small eggs, yes they could be fertile, small eggs. I get this more in the second clutch then in the first but I do often get smaller eggs that are fertile in the same clutch.
The third question took me a few season to figure out too and this is my thoughts on it.
The eggs came out but for some reason the one tip had either a small hole or tear in it. Some of the egg white leaked out and resealed the egg (kinda like fix a flat would do for tire) but it causes a discoloration to the egg and will even grow mold some times. Although I have good luck hatching these eggs with no problem.
Hope this helps

Yes, that helped a lot, thanks! Good to know it wasn't anything I did wrong, because the two that mated, well, they make these kinds of babies, and they look awesome! (although this is a bad picture...)
