I am hard pressed to go night time herping much anymore. I used to go quite a bit and a nice rainy spring night is perfect for road hunting. It brings out the frogs and newts which bring out the snakes, which brings out the raptures and so on through the whole food chain....
In Costa Rica we had good luck at night during the rain also, but you have to remember that while you are driving at 20 mph looking for snakes the car coming up behind you at 50 mph does not know you are snake hunting and may not realize how slow you are going because of the rain. Keep to lightly traveled roads and pull over when you see a car coming up behind you, make it safe for everyone on the road,
good luck
