What's in your SAVANNAH MONITOR'S DIET???

cv768 May 18, 2004 10:28 PM

just wondering what everyone feeds their savs and what a reasonable diet is for a baby and adult.

I've heard mice, crickets, turkey, beef...etc

But I was wondering what is proper...

I feed my baby savannah crickets and superworms. I just dump a dozen crickets and 4 superworms in the cage and add more when it starts running low. It doesn't take long.
for my juvie I feed it crickets and roaches everyday with a hopper thrown in 3 times a week.
I supplement all my baby and rescues with ZooMeds Repivite.
Hope this helps.

Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup.

Hi,

Crickets are great for babies, and I also feed them roaches (Blaberus disciodales). Some will eat canned cat or dog food as well, and even dry food. I know of some folks that use the monitor diet, but I haven't tried it.

I can't recommend enough that anyone with a Sav get Daniel Bennett's book - it is really a great resource, and only about 12 bucks or something (you can get it from him directly at mampam.com) or any of the web book sites.

Good luck with your monitor.

Personally I feed mine 90% bugs. I have a 2 1/2-3yo....can't remember of the top of my head, who is like 3 ft. (gee, I gotta get some weights and measures) and a smaller 'Petco' sav that I got at about a foot long and she hasn't gotten the size of the first.....Both eat cockroaches. The bigger gets Hissers, the smaller gets Lobsters. Occasionally they are trash cans on snake feeding times and get a mouse. By no means a definitive test but they are both doing fine and love to chase the bugs. (okay, that is anthropomorphizing....lets say they get their exercise)

Where do you find cockroaches? Or do you breed them yourself? I have never seen them at a Pet or Feed store.

Hissers can be bought on the internet. I'll throw in an easy link to a good Madagascar Hissing Cockroach site.
