Depends on how long you want to go between cleanings.Right now with my corns I have them on aspen. It's easier to spot clean and it smells nice.Im also real busy at work and home right now so I made the switch from newspaper. If your a neatness freak and cant stand having a turd clump in a cage then I would use newspaper.Ive used newpaper for years and I still use them on my boas and my tortoise.
It's realy up to you on what you want to use.Just stay away from pine or other fir tree products.Cypress is cool to use also
and it has a nice look to it and it's a million times cheaper then aspen. The only reason I switched to aspen instead of cypress is because I can use my shopvac to clean out cages. The bigger chunks in the cypress would jam the hose....Paul.
I use papertowels for most of my snakes because, like Paul said, when I tried a loose substrate (I tried CareFresh) I couldn't stand to know that there were feces in the cage but I just couldn't find them, so I switched back to papertowels.
There is one snake though that makes an absolute mess with papertowels, burrowing under them, pushing them in the water dish, etc. so I switched him to CareFresh. He seems to like it, or at least I don't have to constantly clean his cage like I used to.

Easy to spot clean, if you get the right kind they are dust free, the snakes like to burrow through them so they serve as another hide and they aren't very expensive.
And they look better then newspaper or paper towels if you have them in a display tank.
