Recommendations for a space heater for my ball python room?

prprjp May 19, 2004 09:17 AM

Hi Everyone:

Does anyone have a recommendation for a reliable, economical space heater for my ball python room? The room is fairly small (say 20 ft square) and has a background temp of around 70F. I plan on plugging the space heater into a Helix thermostat to bump up the room temp to say 78F. My racks will then be heated using flexwatt to provide a warmer area of 82-86F.

Does anyone use a similar system - any advice? I've heard the oil-filled space heaters are pretty good, but don't have any personal experience.

TIA, Ryan

grab one from home depot/....i grabbed the honeywell low profile baseboard heater..like 50 bucks,,,have a 10 hour timer digital temp selection with a few good safety options in it the only thing is it take up a few feet of floor space I'll prob get a more compact honeywell heater & use that one when I get a bigger room/// i have it one 24/7 & so far I have not had a hazard. I dont like oil..it's much easier with electric just plug it in & that's it

I have one of the Delonghi oil-filled radiator heaters (they don't burn oil - they are electric heaters and use the oil to circulate the heat in a radiator-type unit). It works great. I found that a small fan on 'low' to circulate the air in the room helps even out the temperature, too (the fan does not blow on the heater!). It gets the hot air off the ceiling - someone else in here suggested the fan thing, and it really helps.

I keep the fan and the heater on the same thermostat, so they come on at the same time.

In the winter time I heat my 10X14 room with a DeLonghi oil filled electric heater with a 6 setting, minimum/maximum switches, total is like 1500 watts, one switch is 700 and the other 800.....something like that. I run it low and
mostly at night, as the cages heat raise the room temp too. In the summer I don't need the heater at all but my room is in the cellar on two concrete walls that hold the warmth and the interior walls are insulated well. Yes, my power bill went up some but not astronomically. And the temp settings were nice to help me establish consistant temp without a thermostat. With one would be nice. We got it off season for $50
