Question about Uroplatus sikorae

geckogecko May 19, 2004 11:41 AM

I would like to ask is Uroplatus sikorae actually got 2 spp. Uroplatus sikorae sameiti and Uroplatus sikorae sikorae? What is the different between them? Also, is there are specific lenght of their tails? I am questioning because I am planning to add a breeding pair to my Uroplatus colony, I have saw a pair which look really like a Uroplatus sikorae but both of them got a round/oval shaped short tail(around the size of their head).
Also, I would like to ask if anyone got pics or info about Uroplatus pietschmanni. Thanks alot^_^

The main difference between U. S. sameti and sikorae is that the buccal cavity (i.e. the inside of the mouth) is a different colour. Sameti have pink mouths whilst sikorae have blacky-blue mouths.
The tails sound OK on the ones you are looking at, the tails are relitively short on sikorae sp. abouth the length of the head, as you said.
I love sikorae and keep both species, but you must get two of the same sub-species to breed them otherwise it won't happen!

Thanks for all.
Do you mean that at least when I was told that the pair are U. Sikorae no matter which spp. are they, check both of their mouth color to ensure they are the same spp.? Pink fresh color inner mouth means they are U. S. sameiti and black mouth are U.S.sikorae. Either of them have different mouth color means they are 2 difference spp. no matter how close their appearal were and they will not breed anyway. Am I correct?

Thats true - as long as they're both the same sp. then they will get on and breed OK, I have a female sameti housed with a pair of sikorae and they get on OK, but the male sikorae has absolutely no interest in the sameti at all. I'm not sure if they bred whether the eggs would be fertile, but it is best to keep the species seperate anyway.

Thanks for your advise, I will check this up before I purchase that pair anyway.
Beside, here is the pic of it, since I dont know the mouth color to indicate both spp. but look out the odd short tail of it where the arrow pointed. Its shorter than the normal U.sikorae that I have ever see, no matter from others picture or specimens. And it is round/oval in shape.
Just wondering if this is really U.sikorae or others.

Subspecies can breed. Wether it has a black mouth or a pink mouth, the sex cells are neraly identical, so im pretty sure that 98% of the time, they will produce eggs. Doubt me? Go to the chameleon photo gallery, or go to calumma.com; they have chameleon crosses there...These chameleons are also from madagascar, and notice how different each locale is. They have bred crazy things up there, weird combinations. Take care,

Tony

i've got a few pics of pietschmanni, i got a trio a few weeks ago. unfortunately, one female had mites and i think the male might have too, but i tried some stuff on it and it seems to be working. only thing is the male doesnt really seem interested in the one female i bought him with yet, and i have yet to put the second female in. hopefully good things will happen.

That is a stunning gecko, good luck with breeding them.Could I ask how much they cost in the USA, don't think they are very common here in England, I would love a pair.

They usually cost from around $150-$200 for Wc animals.
