Day Geckos

jaybfresh May 19, 2004 12:25 PM

Hey everyone,
I just built a screen cage 12Lx18Wx36H, and was thinking about getting a day gecko (I already have 3 leos and a pair of skunk geckos). I'm interested in hearing which species of day gecko people recommend, and also I'm wondering good places to buy from...I live in upstate New York, so I'm guessing I'll have to buy one from pretty far away. thanks

Hello Jaybfresh:
The two easiest to keep Day Geckos are The Gold-Dust Day Gecko (Phelsuma laticauda) and The Giant Day Gecko (P.m. grandis). Luckily these are also two of the easiest to find species and also two of the easiest to breed. On top of that they are both very colorful species so you can't go wrong with either one of them.
If you want a smaller species P. laticauda is the one to get. They grow to nearly 6" in length.
If a larger species is more to your liking then P. m. grandis is the gecko of choice. They grow to nearly 9" and are quite colorful.
As far as compatibility is concerned the laticauda tolerate eah other in the cage better than the grandis do. These geckos are highly territorial and should be given lots of places to get away from each other.
I hope this helps. Have a Great Day!!!
