When Do I Reduce the Feedings?

masterplan Jun 17, 2003 12:07 PM

I have two Ambanja males that are almost 5 month's old. One has grown quite large and is a voracious eater and quite healthy (Lester). The other one, Shogo, has struggled a bit, but is coming around.

My questions are: I have heard that at 6 months I should reduce the feedings. Is that a guideline or a rule? How much should I reduce to? Should I also reduce the feeding frequency?

Right now, Lester is eating about 10-12 (5/8" crix per day, plus a silk worm or two and a moth here and there.

Shogo is eating about 7-9 (1/2" crix and maybe a moth or two, but that's about it.

Please let me know. You guys have been great!

If these are both males it is not as critical. Basically you don't want them to get too fat. Look at the base of the tail. The cross section of the tail should be shaped like an oval from top to bottom. Completely round is too fat, sinewy and stringy muscle showing is too thin. If these guys are still growing fast and shedding often let them eat. Once they seem to slow down, have their adult coloration, rostrals, crests and forms, you can cut back to every other day. I find I feed a heavier meal one day and a small snack the next, or even get more random.

I use the same approach for all my male chams.

Thanks for the tip! One tail base is perfect (Lester). Shogo's could use a bit of fattening up. He just deosn't seem to eat with the same fervor as his compadre.
