Alright guys I'm really having trouble getting these hatchlings to eat

fadetolemons May 19, 2004 01:15 PM

All i have are mealworms right now, but i'm going out in a little while to try and find some small crickets. They just seem to not notice the mealworms, no matter how hard i try, and they look like they really need to be eating. Is it normal for babies to not eat much at first or when they first move to a new place? Normally I would be fine giving them a few days but they just really look like they need food, and since they are so fine with being held and are exploring their cage and all i figure they'd be in a mood to eat but they aren't at all.

Give them time they will eat. When I got mine last Friday one ate and the other one didn't so they just need time. Trust me if they are hungry they will eat.

Didn't you just get them today? It does not surprise me that they are not eating yet. Give them a day or two and try offering crickets, that is most likely what the dealer was feeding them, if they were ever fed at all.

Yeah, well I went out and got them some crickets. I put some in there and it worries me because it seemed like they were scared by them, at least the little blizzard was. However, there was a tiny little poop in the hide they were in when i got back, so that's a good sign. I'm just going to leave some mealworms in there and try every once and a while with a cricket or two over the next day or two. I'm sure they'll come around. I was just worried, because i know they'll eat if they're hungry; it's just that they LOOOK Hungry!! lol. oh well, it's probably just that they're babies and look all thin, I'll keep trying and hopefully they'll start eating.

I'm sure they will be fine, and I can understand your concern. They are little ones, probably a bit nervous and frightened but they will be fine. I bet they throw a munch on the crickets!

Hey, I put two crickets in there earlier, and then checked and they were both gone, and then I watched the baby albino eat 2 crickets and chase around some more, I also found some poop. haha! Now I can sleep at night! I guess the crickets did the trick. I still have about 25 more crickets so I should be set til the weekend incase they don't like the 900 mealworms i have lol. Crazy geckos and their picky tastes.

Lol, good for you. My little guys ate crickets right away as well. It took some time and effort but they now also eat mealworms. One of them wouldn't touch worms for the first couple of weeks. Now they all down 10-15 a night.

My supplier only has one size of mealworms, they seem to vary a bit in size. When I was feeding them 1/4" crickets they were eating about 12 each. However, this seems to have slowed down a bit and they usually eat about 8 one night and about 13 the next.
