How long before first feeding?

haunani May 19, 2004 01:30 PM

How long should I wait before giving my ARB his first feeding after he arrives? I don't know how old he is but know he's approx. 3.5-4' long and has been traveling since the 15th (this past Saturday). He'll be going into a brand new enclosure once he arrives also. I want to make sure I start off on the right foot with him.

Please do elaborate on "traveling since Sat."

Your ARB will not keel over and die overnight. Make sure you have your husbandry requirements right before it arrives because this will be one STRESSED out snake.

In general I like to feed my snakes on the first day. I find the full belly helps the settle in faster. Also, if they are fed immediately, it is a good sign of how they are going to feed later on.

For you, I'd stick with the generally accepted standard of one week in it's home, with no handling either, to allow your snake to get over the traveling.

The first thing you'll need to do is supply correct husbandry.
Then, if everything is good offer a meal. A healthy adult snake can go weeks without a meal, so don't hurry it along. Get the temperature and humidity correct first. It does seem like too long a travel unless it's requirements were met almost perfectly.

I try to give every new animal i receive time to acclimate to it's new home. I spend a few days monitoring temp. and humidity...and also, the snakes overall behavior.

I feed it when I KNOW everything is right, and the snake seems comfortable. Also, snakes sometimes react poorly to travel. Stress can cause regurgitation, which comes with a whole new set of problems.

Good Luck, and welcome to the forum!

Yes, he's been traveling since the 15th. My cousin is the one bringing him down to me from my dad, as he is passing through here on his way to long-term training for his job. He's coming from Montana, I'm in Georgia, and his training is in Florida. He stopped for a few days to visit his mom and his sister in western Illinois and will be getting here tomorrow afternoon. He's said that the snake hasn't been too people friendly the last day or two, which I expected due to the stress he's experiencing. The final elements of his habitat are arriving today and will immediately be put into place and tested before moving him into it. He might have to spend an extra day or two in his old 10gallon home, but I want to move him into the new one as soon as I'm sure everythings working as it's supposed to.

Yes, it is a LONG drive!

Where in Idaho? My dad just recently moved back to Blackfoot from my cousin's in Montana... that's when he decided to give the snake to me and let my cousin bring it down since he'd be passing through anyhow.

Where in Georgia, too? (if you don't mind)

I live in Macon. Probably about 2.5-3 hours straight west from Savannah. I absolutely love it out there (Savannah). It's a great place for culture, food, history, and especially photography
