Venom ER on the Discovery channel

socalherper May 19, 2004 02:57 PM

Have you HOT snake species keepers seen this show? It is interesting. The show is based on people that have gotten bitten my venomus snakes and how they are treated in the ER.
It is based at Loma Linda Hospital in So.California and Venom ER dept. run By Dr. Sean Bush.

What do you guys think about this show if you have seen it?

In So.California it is on Tuesday nights.

Here's the discovery link. Scroll down when on the page.

Dr. Bush is a good guy who truly finds these animals fascinating. The show avoids as much sensationalism as possible (by Animal Planet standards!). And while it shows some serious snake bites, I think that the producers and Dr. Bush do a good job in not painting a terribly negative picture about rattlesnakes. Instead, they raise awareness about the perils of living and recreating in this particular area of California while giving these snakes the respect that they deserve (which sounds like heaven to me!). Accually, I have met him at a IRBA show in San Diego.
He seems to be a very cool guy who knows his stuff.
I do like the fact that he takes his students out in the field to do some "hands on" experience sort of speack.
I do like the show and I am teaching myself more and more about the effects of different kinds of Venom and what the effect are in both humans and animal alike.
Venom types very interesting.

I think its a great show that will help raise awareness without bringing a bunch of negative attention to herps. Its nice to see there are some shows like that popping up. Unlike the croc hunter that are educational and entertaining without the over sensational aspects.

I find humor in some of the bite cases...you really see some people who are just asking to be bit...the guy earlier in the season whose S. pacific escaped (yikes!) from it's enclosure, he found it, and instead of using a hook (did this guy even own one????) or at the very least a broom or something, HE REACHED DOWN AND PICKED IT UP! In my opinion, he was a waste of the 54 or so vials of crofab they had administer to him...people like that should not be keeping hots. Or the guy the other night who believed that DRINKING VENOM would provide him immunity from rattlesnakes...ummmmm, no. Then of course there are the legitimate bites like the poor fellow who ended up dying as a result of accidently stepping on a S. pacific (seems like this is the most common biter in that area). That guy I really felt sorry for, and his family too...but not these morons who intentionally do stupid things that result in them sucking up the AV that should be delegated to a life more worthy of saving. Just an opinion, maybe harsh, but such is life.

If i see any of those guys walking down the street i will slap em in the back of the head.

The doc doing it is a true herper and thats one thing I love about the show these idiots who get bitten for idiodic reasons, without slamming them the doc has a great way of showing how its their fault and making the people out to be the aggressor and not making it apear as though the big bad venomous snake has it in for humans. Ive only seen a few of these shows but I tell ya I have the upmost respect for the doc. While alot of what is on the show is nasty stuff they do a great job of showing whos to blame. We all know better but the general public doesnt and I think for alot of people who dont know better if they watch his show with an open mind will learn to respect these animals and will learn not to have such a negative opinion about them. I just think its great to see something like this show done the way it is. What else is there the croc hunter, I got no respect for him, hes all about how he can use the animals to get ratings.

For what it's worth....

You know I have been herping for years and I have such a respect for Venomous Snakes even the Non Venomous ones I breed. A snake is the ultimate survivor as far as I am concerned. I have no fear only respect for Venomous Reptiles and I have handled alot of Crotalus before, for photos and amazment, heck there all over So. Calif. you can't help but run into them.

I just don't understand or it just amazes me how some people out there can take a Venoums reptile and it's potencial for granted.

What I mean is a great portion of those cases can be and should be avoided for the real accidental Venomous Snakebite.

See you in the field,
Tony Lanzi
