When is not eating a concern?

kohrn May 19, 2004 05:31 PM

My male corn stopped eating in mid March. OK, it's was that time of year. Mating activity continued until late April (when she was big enough to find it uncomortable). He then ate once, right after her prenatal shed (two lg. adult mice). We separated them a few days later and she laid eggs on May 1st. Since late April he has not eaten. (He's currently housed in a separate aquarium, right next to the female's aquarium). At what point should I worry about his not eating? Other than ignoring the mice he appears healthy (alert, not particularly thin). I'd rather not move them to separate rooms unless this is really necessary. Is the lack of eating discomfort (still?) with his new bachelor quarters, or hopeful sex drive (not wanting to be sluggish should he get a chance) or ?
Thanks
Corinne

It is still breeding season and the fact that your female just did her post egg laying shed means that she is ready to have him again!! I would get a few good meals into her and put him back in the cage for round two. The male should start to eat again in a few more weeks when the second clutch is fertilized. I also have several males not eating and just wanting to make woopie all the time, it is natures way and they will be fine
good luck
