Moving this up.. RE. Marking Eggs and Hatching rates...

Lucien May 19, 2004 05:56 PM

Hold on a minute.. there might be something to this... You know how they say feeder mice/insects should not be fed on dog or cat food containing red dyes because it can affect the herp its being fed to? I noticed something as well.. the eggs I had die this year were also marked using red.. but the one I marked using blue hatched out fine. The eggs I just had laid are going very good now too.. and are also marked in blue. My earlier eggs all died before a few days were up after laying and confirmation of veins was present so they were fertile. And as we all know.. eggs breath through permeable shells...Something in the red dye used in markers may be part of the problem.. Any one else's thoughts on this idea?

I used red on the first clutch, and one died and the other is still in the incubator, but I don't think it's going to hatch. The others look great are marked with black. I don't know if it has anything to do with it or not.

LOL Wow, I thought I was just being creative

We don't use red markers, though.. Just black permanent markers. Still no clue, and still only 1 baby hatched
