Giant Day Gecko Illness

Chris P. May 19, 2004 09:14 PM

My Giant Day Geckos have developed some type of illness. They first had the problem last December, and are in the middle of a bout of it now. Both my male and female become very sluggish, spending most of their time on or near the bottom of their cage. They refuse all food, but drink when sprayed. They seem to have great difficulty climbing glass. In december, the problem resolved itself within a few days. This time I am nervous, as it has been about three days now and is their second bout of it. Any ideas on what it might be.

Thanks,
Chris

alright inform us on their care tank size, temps, food etc.

No offense, but their care is not the problem. I have had the female for several years, and the male a little less. They have always thrived, and breed consistently.
Today I did a cloaca wash and no parasites were found. I'm stuck.

Sometimes its not the cage but whats in it that can effect the geckos. I know thats if fake plants are in the tank but have not been cleaned at times can start growing bactria on them, which could be passed on the geckos. I'm not saying thats whats happen, but just something i remember reading. If possible get them to a vet, if you can't do that than a stol sample to a vet is ggod, i knwo thats hard scens they haven't been eating.

You haven't feed them wax worms have you?

I have not feed them wax worms.

You are right a stool sample is difficult to obtain when they are not feeding, that is why I did a cloaca wash.

Wax worms every now and then are not that bad, but they can lead to fatty liver problems. But also some animals get hooked on them and will refuse any food except wax worms, which will lead to problems later, so if've read and herd. Some animals have been known to eat anything and have no problem switching from wax worms to mealworms, but i made the mistake of giving my Day Gecko "Dingo" wax worms as a treat and he wouldn't eat anything eles untill hunger got the better of him.
