Wild male bullfrogs fighting

Jeff B May 19, 2004 09:31 PM

Last night I was running a weed-eater around my pond and heard a bullfrog calling. t didn't take too long to find it, or the other frog nearby that was calling. They'd each croak a few times, then swim/hop a little closer in the water. Right after one particularly loud calling ontest, they started wrestling for a good ten minutes. It was pretty funny to watch. Has anybody else gotten the chance to witness this behavior?

Oh,and yes, I'm sure they were both males. If not, then it was the clumsiest attempt by frogs to mate ever.

What an excellent observation! I personally have not seen that. You should get up with your state's herp society about this. If they happen to have a peer-reviewed journal, it might be worth to publish your observations. Of course this would require a literature search to see if this behavior has been observed before in your state.

I'd be surprised if someone from my state's (Missouri) Conservation Department hasn't already seen bullfrogs wrestling, they're usually on top of things. I did however have to do some explaining and show my grandmother a site that talked about bullfrogs before she'd believe me.

I have observed male green tree frogs fighting in the breeding season but can't say I have seen bullfrogs doing the same.
