Just a quick question on Food Size

Krazy-K May 19, 2004 11:05 PM

I have a wonderful little BRB I picked up about five weeks ago.I have fed him/her five times on hopper mice (2, about thumb size).
Well, today one of my Kingsnakes refused to eat. Seeing as I had three fat mice left over, I let the BRB try another one. Which was snatched up and gobbled. I was wondering if this is an indication That I need to move up to a larger mouse?
And can you overfeed a BRB?
Thanx in advance for any replies.
Oh, here is a pic just because.
Keith

Keith,
. Pretty snake.
. Is it ready to move up to larger mice? It depends upon how big your BRB is. BRBs are around 16 to 18 inches long when born and one hopper mouse per meal is good for them at that size. When they reach 24 inches one small adult mouse or two hoppers makes a good meal. Little BRBs can eat very large meals but the larger the meal the more likely they are to regurg. They are very efficient at converting food into growth without getting obese when they are young. An ideal feeding schedule should grow a young BRB an inch or two per month. If they grow at this rate for the first 24 months they should not become obese. When they get older feeding them too much can cause them to become obese.
. Your BRB looks a little dry. It also looks like it is approaching a shed. Little BRBs require extremely high humidity. When they are getting ready to shed they especially need the high humidity so that they can easily shed their skin.

I have done much Research on Temps and Humidity. My temp is 84 on the hot side during the day and 76 on the cool side.
Humidity is at nearly a constant 75-80% during the day, dropping down to 70-75% at night.
Since that photo was taken, Shed has come and gone. And I must say that the colors are sooo much more powerful after the shed.
Thank you for the input,
Keith K.

The Fact that you are reading these posts attests to your love for these snakes. I am a first time BRB keeper, so any input is worthwhile. I listed my conditions cause I didn't want you to get the wrong idea. I can't thank you enough sir.
Your posts are the most informative of all that I have read. My tank is in the condition it is in due in large part to your past threads.
I would personally like to thank you, Jeff, for taking time out of your day to peruse this forum and set us inexperienced keepers straight. I can't stress enough how helpful you have been.
Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank You Thank you Thank you........you get the idea.

p.s.- here is a new pic of that "dry" snake. j/k

I reread my post from before, and I must apologize. It reads a little pretentious. i did not mean it that way.
Besides, most of the research i did was to find your posts from the past, Jeff. LOL.
and whats with the n/p ?
does it mean no problem?
Tanks.

People use it the subject line when they don't actually put anything in the body of the message, to save people the trouble of opening their post...

Best Wishes, Chris
