Tennesee snakes and herping honeymoon

riiotgrrl May 19, 2004 11:15 PM

My fiance and i are getting married in july and we may be honeymooning in Tennesee. I was wondering about the general species i would come across (chatenooga (sp?) area), and what i should look out for (venom wize). I figured i would ask the message boards...any help would be cool. Thanks all!

Depending on the turf you are in...Copperheads, Moccasins, Timber rattlers and pygmys are all in parts of Tenn. Pick up a copy of Connant FIELD GUIDE TO THE REP. AND AMPHIBS. OF THE EASTERN UNITED STATES and check the range maps.

For the Chattanooga area, based on range maps in Conant and Collins (1998)...

Northern Water Snake (Northern/Midland ssp. intergrade)
Queen Snake
Brown Snake (Northern/Midland ssp. intergrade)
Northern Redbelly Snake
Eastern Garter Snake
Eastern Smooth Earth Snake
Eastern Hognose Snake
Northern Ringneck Snake
Eastern Worm Snake
Northern Black Racer
Rough Green Snake
Corn Snake
Rat Snake (Black/Gray/Yellow ssp. intergrades)
Northern Pine Snake
Black Kingsnake (may intergrade w/Eastern Kingsnake)
Eastern Milksnake (intergrade w/Scarlet Kingsnake)
Mole Kingsnake
Northern Scarlet Snake
Southeastern Crowned Snake
Northern Copperhead
Timber Rattlesnake (aka Canebrake)

The last two are the only venomous ones (at least the only ones to be considered dangerous). Cottonmouths are close by, with reports from NW GA and south-central TN.

Hope this helps. Happy honeymooning!
