Question About handling Leos

Krazy-K May 19, 2004 11:52 PM

I have not done so to date. And I have a fat old man I inherited from a friend of mine. He's very calm, but anti-social.
Is it safe to handle them? I had heard otherwise. But having read the forum, I see that many of you do just that. I mean regular like. Just for friendship.
I have a beardie that I handle almost everyday.
Just wondering. Thanx
Keith K.

We handle ours all the time. Some don't mind it but some do. The ones that do we don't do it very often because we don't want to stress them out.

If he's really anti-social, you can warm him up to it by just putting your hand in there and staying very still. Being curious, he will come over and give you a taste. Do this for a while, preferably right before you feed him, and he should start to see as a friend (bringer of food) and mine will now climb right up as soon as I put my hand in, even if they are not hungry. Just have LOTS of patience and remeber to move slow and quiet.

Mine hear/see me and come running for food obviously but sometime they're just bent on climbing up my arm and out the cage.
Theyr'e totally safe, i've seen some bad bites but hardly. they're pussy cats

I really appreciate it. I have a nice herp collection, and it just keeps growing. I handle all of my animals. They all know me, except for the Gecks. I leave them alone. I will try to coax him tonight.
Usually I just reach in and grab the rest of my animals. They expect it. My snakes will indeed crawl right out into my arm, and my beardie nearly leaps to me. But my gecks are soooooo shy.
Again, thanx for the responses.
