new leo...question about eating

Nicko Jun 17, 2003 01:35 PM

Well my first leo came today. She's awesome. She's two months old.

I tried to feed her, but she wasn't interested. Is this because she's not used to the new tank yet? If so, how long should I give her to get used to it?

I left the room for a minute and came back and found that she was shedding. Since she ate all that, maybe she's not hungry?

It usually takes a new leo a few days to get accustomed to their new surrondings. So by her not eating this is normal. Give her a few days and after that watch to see what she does. Also by her shedding that will give her nutrients also. After a day or so if she still doesn't eat try and put her in a tank or carrier with 6-8 crickets in it, so its just her and the crickets and see how that works. That way the crickets cant get away and you can see how much she does or doesnt eat after 10-15 minutes take her out, so the crickets wont bite her. Hope that helps.

Most likely she is not eating because she is stressed out with all the moving around. Leos, like other reptiles, are very sensitive to stressful situations and this is often shown in a lack of appetite. Give her a day to settle in (don't keep reaching in the tank or buzzing around it...keep it quiet) and tomorrow night try feeding her. It could be that she is shedding, but I think it has more to do with her stress levels at this time. Congrats!!!
