want to know how much to pay for corn morphs. I'm new...

ghettozoohouse May 20, 2004 08:28 AM

I just want to get into corns. I found a 1.1 pair in my area. They are both a couple years old and 2-3ft long.
The 1.0 is amelanistic and the 0.1 is red albino. I think these are the terms but I'm not sure.
I just would like to get an idea on what I should pay for these.
Thanks

Maybe I misread what you wrote, but did you or did you not say where you found these snakes? From an individual or from a shop? That will definitely make a difference on the price.

By the way, amelanistic and red albino are synonymous terms. They both describe snakes that are red, white, and orange/yellow, with no black (amelanistic is from a greek word meaning "no black". Does that basically describe what these two snakes look like? If so, they're both amels.

these snakes are 2 years old and they are screamers. Both hypos but one more white/peach/orange and one more red.
The person wants $180 for the pair.

I have never paid more than $15 for a cornsnake...cheap sob that I am! You will not find one at that price at a pet store. That is one reason that I always suggest finding out if a reptile show comes to your area (click Events, above). $20-$30 is probably acceptable, and you may pay more for older "proven breeders" and rare morphs. One of the things I love about corns is that you can get GREAT ones for very little $$$$...And invest the rest of your money in frozen rodents. Duffy

Wow Duffy, you are a cheap SOB... j/k.

The only kinds of corns I've seen for $15 have been normals, and in reality I don't think I've seen one that I would be willing to buy that was marked for less than $25, just because the ones that were cheaper didn't look so healthy.

I paid 40 bucks for my first corn at a pet store back when I didn't know crap from Shinola. It was a scrawny little ghost that never managed to keep a pinky down without puking.

All my others were $15 or less. But I have to admit that I have a very good friend who is a breeder, and he would gladly sell me ANY hatchling corn for $10. Also, I always buy yearlings or younger, both for cost and because I love to watch them grow. I found a pair of awesome '03 okeetee/normals at the All Ohio Show last December for $15 ea. Actually, the guy was willing to sell me the pair for $30, but would have charged me $20 for just the female(a potential screamer!). Yup, I admit it....I AM a cheap SOB!

First of all I would suggest that you go to Kathy Love's web site www.CornUtopia.com and order her Guide to Corn Snakes book for the information in it. While you are at that web site you can browse through the site and get pictures and ideas of what many of the corn snake morphs look like and what prices they go for. you can also go to Don S's site (sorry Don I don't know your ulr off the top of my head) at South Mountian Reptiles and look to see even more morphs and prices of them. Both sites have great pictures and both breeders are the tops with corn snakes so you can't go wrong with them.
I hope this helps

Serpwidgets has put together a very informative little book on cornsnake morphs and genetics in general. I'd recommend picking it up (it's something like $12 shipped), especially since you're just getting into the morphs and such.

Since they are already a couple years old they should cost more than juvies.Ive seen adults go for 70-100 dollars a piece. The great thing about buying adult corns is that you know they eat.Give them a good looking over and make sure there not wild caught and loaded with mites. If there wildcaught corns that should drop the price in half.

At this point in time I have 7 cornsnakes, plus two more on the way.

In the picture here are four of my cornsnakes. The two striped corns cost me $80 together when they were yearlings. The normal/hypo (het motley) was $29 as a yearling. The reverse okeetee was from a friend who could not continue to keep snakes so was a gift. The other three corns I have cost $100 for the three (as hatchlings) but I do not remember how much they were as individuals.... Ghost (pos het amel, motley), Snow Motley (poss het/homo hypo), and Anery (poss het amel, hypo, and motley). I'll be receiving two more cornsnakes, gender, age, and colors unknown, from someone else who cannot keep them. So that is $209 for 9 snakes... $23.33 per snake if you don't count the 36 eggs I have incubating that I got from the three females in the picture below.

"red albino" and "amelanistic" are the same (as mentioned earlier), but you now say that they are "hypo" as well? Make sure that you know what you're getting before you pay.... $180 is a bit high for these animals (this is a pet store retail price).

I recommend not paying anything more than $150 for the pair.... expect to pay about $100 -$150 for the pair at a show. I picked up a 2 year old corn from Kathy Love at a show once... albinos, snows, anerys were all going for $75 each (these were 2 years old) during the first day of the show.

I purchased a pair of extreme hypo corns (looked like albinos with normal colored eyes - also 2 years old and around 3 feet in length) at another show for $100 ($50 each).

However, if they really are "screamers", then $180 might well be warranted..... post pics if you get them.
