My little one won't eat.

tygar May 20, 2004 08:40 AM

Ok... the other night, we tried to feed our new BRB a live hopper mouse, in a seperate enclosure. He wanted nothing to do with it.
Last night, I tried a f/t hopper, IN his enclosure... he seemed interested (even bit himself once), but I ended up having to feed the mouse to one of my BP's.
When feeding... all lights are out-except for a red lamp... so I can see what I'm doing.
Temps are hovering right around 82 degrees on the warm side of his enclosure, 70's on the cool side. I have him in a fairly large rubbermaid container, with dow rods for climbing. There are plenty of hiding spaces, and some foliage... any suggestions? Also, how long can this little one go without eating? He's about 16 inches (I'm guessing) and the breeder said he was at least 3 months old.
Thanks, in advance

Mindy

Personally I would never feed any of my snakes in their enclosure. There are too many hazards associated, the most important being substrate ingestion and the snake relating the opening of the cage with food.

Maybe you could put your little BRB in a brown paper bag with a live fuzzy or really little hopper for an hour? This removes all distractions (hides/branches/water/substrates/etc) and increases the scent of the mouse in the bag. I have heard wonders about this method and have used it for some of my Ball Pythons. It worked like a charm.

Good Luck.

This has worked for me in the past...put him in a rubbermaid container with a hide box, put the prey item (if your going to feed him live, try a pink rat instead of a hopper mouse, the hopper can bite him) inside with him, cover the entire rubbermaid with a towel, and walk away.

Good luck, Chris

Mindy,

I would check with breeder and see exactly how he/she has been feeding for the last 3 months and match that technique. Make sure your husbandry is within the proper margins, and try again. I do not have the experience that others do, but haven't had any to actually bite themselves. Could it be that the eyesight is diminished due to a coming shed? Or an insecticide was used?

If everything is okay, I would try a live fuzzy fed after lights out in a seperate enclosure.

Actually, tonight I believe he looks to be going into a shed cycle.
Hopefully he will eat after he sheds.

How long can a neonate go without eating?

Gosh, I'm a stress case!

Mindy,
. A healthy little BRB can go a couple months without a meal.
