Rotten eggs?

tourmalinequeen May 20, 2004 09:34 AM

My ball laid a clutch of six a couple wks ago , unexpectedly, as I was housing two together and had always thought of them as two females, though they'd never been officially sexed. The eggs are a yellowish-brown, not the gleaming white I have heard describe and they also look nothing like the eggs laid by my corns, colorwise. I took a chance and have been incubating them, they haven't really changed appearance and aren't moldy. Are these slugs?

Egss can be somewhat variable in appearance, but I've never seen any fertile eggs that I would describe as yellowish brown. Slugs are often a pale golden color. You can candle them to be sure. Hold a small flashlight to the egg in a darkened room. Fertile eggs will glow with a soft, pinkish color, and you'll see numerous blood vessels inside the egg. Infertile eggs have a yellowish glow and no blood vessels. If they are infertile, they'll begin to mold and rot within a few days. Good luck!
