I don't think it is a watersnake (Nerodia ssp.), I would rather call it a garter (Thamnophis ssp.). I believe it to be gravid. Sorry I can't be more help, I don't know western snakes terribly well and don't hve a field guide on hand.

Thanks I to thought it was some sort of Garter when I found it but I have never observed a Garter Snake with these colors and or paterns. He/She did deficate thismorning but all I see is the white cacium nothing ells and its belly is still as big as it was yesterday so maybe it is gravid. Anyone ells have any ideas? I will post on the Garter Foum and see if I get any hits. Thanks agan.

That is a garter snake...It looks like the sierra garter, thamnophis couchi.... It does not look gravid, just looks like it had a large meal. If the snake was gravid, the swelling would be closer to the tail.

Yup, that's a garter, and if you have it in a cage, watch it closely, because pretty soon, that cage is gonna need one heckuva cleaning. That ain't gravidity, it's "my eyes were bigger than my stomach".
