Looking for suggestions on different kinds of lizards

Everlight389 May 20, 2004 11:43 AM

I'm looking for a lizard that meets the following criteria:

1. Fairly large (2'-3').

2. Can live in either a 75 gallon aquarium (48''x18''x30'') or a custom built cage that is 4'x3'x2'.

3. Under $200.

4. Must be docile enough to be handled on a regular basis.

So far I've found bearded dragons, frilled dragons, and ackies, but I'm looking for more species to look at.

Thanks for the help

Uromastyx are fun...egyptians are the ones that are big i believe. Malis are my personal fav tho.
Water dragons would work in a 75g and the males can be impressive. They can be kind of flighty tho.
Blue tongue skinks are wonderful. You can look into the different regions... i have an iran jaya. I will post his pic on the bottom of this.
Beardies are great!
tegus are cool too. Im not sure, but i think that a 75g will be fine for one. Blues are expensive, but if you get a nice argentine b/w i think you would have a nice pet. (check out the photo galleries)
Those are the ones off the top of my head. Good luck with the search!

Bearded Dragons are a GREAT LIZARD! They are very docile and will actually sit with you. Blue tongue skinks are also a great lizard and can be picked up for about 100 dollars(min). I doubt 75 gallon would be big enough for a Tegu. They also get really big,up to 4 feet, they can be really nasty and give a vicious bite.Don't get me wrong, tegu's are GREAT animals...just know what you are getting into. There are plenty of sites that have a lot of info on this animal.

Either a Blue tongue skink (or one of its close relatives) or a bearded dragon.

Was the skink in riotgirl's post a blue tongue?

Yeah that was a blue tounge and a nice one at that! There are blue tongues from different regions. I use to have a blue tongue but gave it to my cuz. She had him for about 5-6 years already and sometimes wish I didn't give him away but I really had no choice at the time cause my apartment was small. I just recently got back into herps although I am more fond of snakes then lizards. I have a yellow rat snake, getting a 50/50 king snake tomorrow,a painted turtle a few anoles and house geckos. Thats just my reptiles!

I set up a 10 gallon for the 50/50 since young snakes do better in smaller enclosures. As soon as I seen the snake I fell in love and told the breeder to hold him for me.He is a 'true' 50/50 as the white/black bands are equal. It's a regular pet shop but the guy in charge of the reptile section has some awesome morphs. He had a reticulated python morph that was like 5 Grand! He sold him fairly quick to.I kind of thought 5 G's for a snake was a little steep but I guess someone liked the price! He deals with a lot of pythons,dartfrogs,milks/kings/corns and bearded dragons. He also has a HUGE alligator snapper that is not for sale. That thing is MEAN looking.
