Use of air plants (tillandsia)??? ....

Mayo May 20, 2004 12:11 PM

I was thinking of introducing some tillandsia in with our leopards. Have any of you done this? Are there any reasons why I should not? I see them with arrow frogs, so I would think they would work safely with leos. Any feedback would be appreciated.

I used them for a short while in my tank. I plan on putting them back in when my geckos get a bit older. I pretty much took everything out except for the necessities. I didn't have any problems with them. Right now they are still growing on my dresser. Here are the pictures of my tanks before I had to take them apart. The geckos were just getting into too much mischief and the crickets where finding too many places to hide.

Thank you for the pictures. Looks very nice. I was thinking of of making the cave set-up with panted syrofoam as someone posted a few months back. Also including some driftwood of cork park with the tillandsia.

Sounds good. I want to do the cave set-up as well, it would have to be when they are older and get along better. I had to separate them because they kept nipping at each other.

I did use them once in an enclosure i had. What a disaster. They were eaten by the crickets within a few days. My concern was that im not sure if they are toxic....an if the crickets eat them, if the crickets will carry over some of that toxin. I think it would be possible. Gut loading crickets with air plants cant be good.

Really the crickets just hid in mine, and that was only when they were able to escape. I didn't notice them eating the plants, but I only had them in there for a couple of weeks.

I don't feed with crickets, so I didn't account that into the scenerio. I guess the mealworms could climb on them. Will have to look into that.
