Help with Posable Garter I.D?

Collected this snake rite smack dab in the middle of Sopiago creek in the Eldorado National Forest in N. Cali. It was resting on some rocks in about 1-2" of water. I was told in the Snake I.D Forum that it looked like a type of garter can anyone help? Also It either ate somthing big or it is actualy a She and she is gravid what do you think? That's a Sierra garter snake (Thamnophis couchii). And the way that lump is centralized, it looks like it has just eaten a fish.

Is it normal for them to be so dark? I have collected manny garters through the years and I have never observed one this dark in color. It was a fish. It pucked it up yesterday WOOHOO did that stink up the house.

All the pictures that I've ever seen of this species has been of dark specimens. According to one of my field guides however, their coloration can range from olive brown to very dark brown or black.

Oh yeah, I can also sympathize with what you went through when that snake puked up the fish. I once caught a Santa cruz garter that regurgitated an incredibly disgusting slimy smelly half digested tadpole. The aquatic species of garters seem to have a propensity for doing this. Their musk also seems to be way more stinky than the terrestrial species.
