FLORDIA, What To Prepare For???

JohnZ May 20, 2004 03:07 PM

Need some help, I am moving to Florida(central on Gulf Coast) and will be breeding my Balls there. What i want to know is will i need to worry about anything there that i do not have to worry about here?

OK, i am in Minnesota now. My Balls live in Racks in my basement. I have to heat the room they are in year round(to about 80 degrees) and then rely on the racks to do the rest. In winter i have to also work on keeping humidity up since without help, the room is at 20% tops. So i keep it up around 50% to 60%. Other than that, all is fine.

Now in Florida i am guessing i will not have to heat them year round. I will be haing a buliding built on a slab with concrete walls. Will i have to worry about it getting too hot in there? Will i need an AC unit or ceiling fans? Will i have to worry about humidity?

Any tips or help would be great. Thank you very much... John

I would have both a ceiling fan and an AC unit that HAS a memory. If they AC goes out and comes back on it goes right back to it's last temp. My first Amana AC unit for my herp room did not have a memory... the power was off for a few hours and when it came back on the AC did not. I have well over a couple thousand watts running and when I got home the ambient temp was around 92?! Talk about a panic for both me and the reptiles. I think I actually saw a snake sweating!?! Hahaha... so, I replaced the unit with a Whirlpool with memory and have had NO problems since.

Ah, Florida. I love this place. Coming from Minn? How soon? You are going to find out what warm and humid really is!

Matt
p.s. - Humidity is no worry. My herp room is around 50 to 70% all the time. Heck, the house is like that too even with AC on.

Thanks, i use to have an AC unit in Hawaii that had a memory. I know what you mean by thet. It was digital and you set the temp. on it and it did all the work(on and off as needed). And when the power went out and then back, it kicked on to the temp i had set, so not problems. I will get a window one for my Ball building.

I will also get a couple ceiling fans as well, would not be bad to keep the air moving.

I am moving the 19th of June. I am taking my snakes down in a Ryder truck(so a 3 day trip).

Thank you for the advise... John
