My rhino keeps dislocating his back big toe

buzzard1 May 20, 2004 03:34 PM

My rhino Dozer keeps dislocating his 2 big toes som how. 3 weeks ago he bent his toe back in the middle. It swelled up into a little ball and was bent back a little. I call a animal hospital that told me there was nothing much they could do cause he is only 1 1/2 feet long (6-7 months old). The vet also said at his young age he would more then likely heal himself. Well I kinda want to keep my lizzard pain free from possible further pain in is older life of using that toe for climbing, not to mention the fact I wanted to keep him flawleess as possible. Well time went by and now he did it to the same tow on the opther side. It looks dislocated and not broken since its at the joint Im not really sure what to do. If he requires an expensive operation im not sure if I would be able to aford it now not to mention would he just dislocate it again after its healed. So im confused on what to do.

Although the big toe does seem to have just slightly enlarged joints, overall your lizard looks pretty healthy and normal. It is common for the joints on the large toe to look prominant when compared to the other toes.

Rhinos are very hardy and self healing. From what can be seen in the picture, it does not look like you have anything to worry about.

Trust me the picture doesnt give it justice but both of his toes are bent back. When the first toe went I tried to splint it but had no luck. I wish I drove (had a dui) so I can get a positive idntificaction if he is a male and what the heck is up about his toes. Look I know these are injuries, I know what his toes were like before, Im guessing he either wants them this way or he is strange and did this by accident. I have never seen a lizzard do thin and I have had over 40 lizzards in my life. I called vets and they said he wil be ok since he is so young and he will heal him self no matter what but dang I feel so guilty for what happened. I am guessing he dislocated his toes cause he was trying to get away from me. Im a little sad for my soul partner, any medical help will do here.
thanks

In your second picture, the left leg big toe does appear to be swollen, or is that the shadow lighting of the picture ? Can't tell. Either way not much to do for that. Just provide good husbandry and it should slowly heal on it's own. Good luck.
