Converting an aqaurium. How do I get a screen on it?

yeahx May 20, 2004 06:31 PM

I was given this aqaurium over a year ago and I want to use it for a gecko but I dont have any ideas on how to get a screen put on it that I can open for feeding and cleaning. I would like to have it standing tall but if I have to I will just keep it the way it was intended. I already cut out(badly) the cutouts from the top except for the circular ones in the corners. I also have some screen already.

Any help would be great thanks. Trying to save some money here and give my gecko more room.

Ok I guess the image url changed. It's the last pic in my "animal" picture album on yahoo photos.

Most pet stores sell screen tops or order one online. You can make em but if you don't have the stuff on hand, it's better just to buy one. I'm not sure of the dimensions of your aquarium so I'm assuming it's one of the standard sizes.

I don't know if one of those will work for what I want to do. I think I have the picture working now so you can get a better idea. I want to have it on it's side like this and to have a hinged screen on it. I just don't know how to make the screen frame or how to attach the hinges. I might just end up having it right side up though if I can't figure it out.

I see. One option would be to make a slide in screen instead, if you could work that out. Home Depot & Lowes have 'make your own screen kits' that let you make a window screen any size. You could also use these to make a hinged screen lid but I'm not sure how to get it so it stays in place.

I've never tried it but I think you could probably by a hinged screen lid and resize it. Good luck.

Make the screen hinged lid using the materials from home depot like I said. Then buy some plexiglass from there as well. Cut a few thin pieces and glue them 'around' the screen using silicone or whatever. That will keep the lid from sliding around. It will work nicely.
