What is this CORK stuff everyone is always talking about???

TANZEE May 20, 2004 06:53 PM

Hey, I always hear of people using that cork in their vivariums. Where do you get it and how do you use it. It would be nice for molding a terrain into the wall of my tanks.
Thanks.

It's just cork bark. You can get it anywhere. Practically any place that sells herp stuff sells it. Check BlackJungle.com it's prety cheap there. It's good stuff. Doesn't rot from moisture, great for wet habitats and vivariums.

Thanks for the quick reply!
Next time I go down to the pet store I will look for it.
But can you tell me exactly how I use it? Like how can I mold it into a background playground for my toads or frogs?
If anyone has any pics or plans drawn out that they can show me that would be GREEEAAT!!!
Thxs again!!!

You can't rally mold it. It's just a big piece of bark. You can use it as a background, though. Just silicone it into place directly on the glass using the same stuff they use for "glueing" aquarium glass panels together. Except use black silicone. It looks better. Also fill any cracks or big spaces with it so your frog or crickets won't get in there and get stuck and die. While the silicone is still tacky, stick some dry moss over it, to cover it up. It'll stick. Let it dry in a well-ventilated area for at least 24 hours. I'd wait 48 hours just to be safe.

Well that sounds easy enough. I was mistaken though. I had assumed that cork bark could be molded..oh well!
Today I bought some custom cut glass for my tank to make a second level for my frogs...I think I may just stick to that!
I have two different kind of silicones...black and clear. Why do you say that black looks better?-or is that just for the cork bark. Would the clear look better with the glass?
And it's good to know to wait 24-48 hours for it to set...I had no idea and the people at the pet store didn't tell me that!!
Thxs

I was referring to just the cork bark when I mentioned the black silicone. But the clear would look a lot better with the glass you bought.
