Can Cane Toads Digest Cicadas?

dleary946 May 20, 2004 07:19 PM

I have no doubt they can swallow cicadas, but can they digest them? Also, are cicadas a decent (healthy) food for them?

I've heard that some dogs who are prone to eating cicadas end up with digestive tract problems because they can't digest cicadas.

Thanks,

I am not aware of any problems with feeding them to herps. Dogs also can't eat chocolate so I wouldn't use that as an indicator of what is safe! I myself plan on collecting a few cicadas for a captive copperhead, since they are known to be favored treats.

has anyone considered how much pesticide/fertilizer cicadas could have come in contact w/ during their 17 years underground due to contaminated rain water and such. just a thought.
