Adult no tail cresties.....

lilroach56 May 20, 2004 07:34 PM

Hello all. the good pet store near my house has a crestie with no tail, it is about 4" long, that is how long adults would be without the tail right? also is $80 a good price for a orange/tan fire?

You'd be able to tell if the gecko's male, because of the VERY OBVIOUS hemipenile bulge just under the base of the tail (really, it *looks* sorta like they've got ...um... balls). If it's an adult gecko with an SVL of at least 4 or 5 inches and there's NO obvious bulge, then I'd almost guarantee it's female. And $80 for an adult female (particularly if her coloration is nice) is a DAMN GOOD PRICE. Adult females commonly go for around $100-$150 (that I've seen at shows).
Unfortunately, the tail won't ever regrow. It might affect her climbing ability some and I don't know if I'd ever breed her. BUT, if she's in good shape, active and eating well, I'd go for it.

Jake,

Without seeing the gecko, it's hard to say. If they're really only 4" SVL (Snout to Vent Length), then I'd say they're not quite fully grown.

That price isn't bad for a store, but I would use caution when purchasing anything at a pet store, especially if they have any wild caught lizards (Golden Geckos, Tokay Geckos, etc.) You never know what that Crested has been through or been exposed to. I've had fairly bad luck buying adult Cresteds, so I've resorted to just growing my own from babies.
