Quick egg-question ... please help

Finnigan May 20, 2004 10:54 PM

Hi Everyone!!

I'm very excited ... my first attempt at breeding corn snakes is reaching a peak ... my girl is laying.

My question is how long does it usually take for her to lay all her eggs? Minutes? Hours?

I lifted up her lay box and looked underneath (she's buried in moss) to see if she was laying. I could see at least 5 eggs. Think I bothered her by looking in the laybox?

Here's some key dates:

Mated (with Krisg's snow male) on: April 4th
Pre-lay shed: May 6th
Laying: May 20th

All babies will be normal het snow unless my girl turns out to be het for anery or amel or both.

My incubator is set for 80 degrees, sound good?

Thanks in advance,
Joel

I had a female last year that took three day to lay her entire clutch of eggs!!! It drove me nuts. I would try and give her as much privacy as possible. The snakes feel very unprotected during this time and each time you open the cage may postpone the laying by hours until the snake feels comfortable again. I would let he be all day and maybe check her again in the morning to see if she has made progress. Congrates on the new eggs!!! What are the babies going to be?

I checked again this AM (see the pic above) and will check again this aft before I leave for the weekend. She's a small girl and a first time breeders, so I can't imagine much more than 15 eggs.

All babies will be normal het snow.

Thanks for you kind words,
Joel

Hoppy:

I'm in the same boat that Finnigan is in but mine is a second year breeder that was at 330gr when breeding started - a bit on the small size. My question is - how long do you wait on your females to lay their clutch of eggs before you conclude and react to the female being egg bound? Some opinions are 48 hours, some are 7 days.....
Value your opinion and experience.....

Thank you:

I would giver her 5-7 days before I would react to the posiblity of her being egg bound, give here a few days of totally uninterupted time and then check on her to see if the egg has passed, if not then you can start looking into resolving the egg bound problem.
Good Luck
