What's up with Digit??

Linda G May 21, 2004 09:25 AM

Since he got his big enclosure he does not want me to
pick him up. In his old enclosure, he would stand still and
let me pick him up.

He has not started tail whipping and biting again and seems
fine after I get my hands on him. He acts like he has never
seen me in his life. He just wants to sit and look out his
window. I guess he likes the birds more than me

What's up with this? enclosure or age?

Linda

Certainly a large part of it could be that Digit just needs to get use to the new surroundings, but I think that also when iguanas are moved to larger or more adequate enclosures, they instinctually feel more confident and territorial. Basically, they like their new surrounding so much they really would rather just stay there and be iguanas in the most natural way possible.
Even my sweet Kermit acts that way when I try to take him back in for the night after spending the day in his 6'x4' outside enclosure. Though he doesn't act that way when I take him out there in the morning
His indoor enclosure is just as large, it also has a pool and vines for climbing and proper UVB and temps and humidity. The only difference is the feel of the breeze and grass and the sounds of nature, and suddenly he hates me!
Of course I'm not trying to be discouraging at all, Digit will come around. In contrast, I wanted to show you that your's is not the only iguana who wishes to just be an iguana at times.
