RES with a Western Painted?

ianfaith May 21, 2004 11:38 AM

Ok, I know that RES can carry a virus that can be deadly to Painteds. What is the virus and how would you know if they are carriers? I've had two of the RES for 20 years and one that I just rescued (which is the one I would trust the least). Is there a test for this virus?
The Painted I found on a golf course as a hatchling a year ago. He was lucky, they were mowing that fairway and he wouldn't have lasted long under the gang mower. He's now nearly 4 inches and I'd like to eventually move him into the pond outside with others if it's safe.

Unfortunately many viruses can go undetected so it's a crapshoot no matter how you slice it. If the animals all appear to eating, growing healthy and happy and you have had them for such a great lenght of time I would not worry too much about putting them together. IF you want to be safe you could at least have fecal exams done to see if anyone is carrying any parasites. If you pond is big enough and their are areas for the painted to "duck out" if the sliders get a bit aggressive you could put them together when he gets a bit bigger.
