What kind of boa constrictor...

Tigergenesis May 21, 2004 12:20 PM

I'm thinking of trying a larger boa (only boas I have right now are sand boas), but am not sure what I'm looking for. I want something that stays below 6 feet (below 5 is even better). I don't want something too big like a BCI - so I'm thinking some kind of subspecies like a Hogg Island boa. Or even a Dumeril. What other options are there and what can I expect to feed an adult of these species?

Thanks for any ideas and info in advance!

You can look into dwarf boas
I have some sonoran dwaf boas that are the cutest little things.. even as adults they are fairly small. I dont have any pictures off hand..
Gus from Rio Bravo Reptiles should have some pics online

I've not heard of these. What size prey do adults eat? I'm trying to visualize how thick they get.

Thanks again.

you're making my decision harder with all those choices! LOL. Seriously, thank you for those ideas. Can you tell me what an adult of these species might eat?

Thanks again!

Well, first off, a Hogg Island boa IS a type of Bci. However, they will stay smaller than their Colombian cousins that are more prevalent in the trade. Gus at RioBravo is the one to talk to for insular boas. There are several subspecies of Bci that stay at or below the 6' range. As far as dumerils go, some will stay under 6' but others can easily reach 7-8' or more. And no, there's really no telling which they will be. I bought my pair of Dumerils in '99 and the parents were in the 6-7' range or better. My female is right at 5' and the male about 4' - neither of them has shown any appreciable growth in over a year. Granted I have fed them more leanly than many keepers typically do because they don't have the metabolism of the redtails, which is how most keepers feed them. As another option, rainbow boas stay within the size range you're looking for and are great captives (I have a Colombian rainbow myself). They're a bit more work in some ways that the Bci, but still great pets.

Good luck in your search.

Just a thought.

very beautiful coloring...hearty captives...

Hog's Island boas are a good choice, I'd try to find a "pure" Hog if you go in that direction. Just my opinion.

Rosy boas are neat pet also...and with your sand boa experience you would be one step ahead..

Good luck, Chris
