Lizard-lady May 21, 2004 12:25 PM

Help! I just discovered my 30in Redtail got out of his cage last night! He's so small I'm afraid we'll never find him. We live on the 7th floor of a high rise if he gets into another apartment not only will we be looking for another place to live but also my husband will loose his job because he works here too. Help!

I have had a few get out over the years.. and I usually find them pretty close to the cage they came from.

Your best bet is to get on the floor.. on your belly.. and look for open spots he/she would have sought out to hide in. It is amazing how many small open areas you will find under cabinets etc. when down on that level.

I did have one travel a few rooms down the hall.. and then get under the kitchen cabinets. I found him by crawling around on the floor and I noticed a gap in the corner of the kick plate.. pointed the flashlight in there and sure enough there he was. Of course.. we had to take the ENTIRE countertop off to get to him.. but we found him!

I would also check any shoes close by or other items that may be a good dark place to hide.

GOOD LUCK.. and keep us posted on your progress.

Look on top of things. They love to climb. In my experience, boas like to move around and ball pythons find a dark spot and stay there.

My 7 ft. female escaped her cage last night, but she's not very graceful and woke me up knocking things over. She was really disappointed to have to go back into her cage at 3:00 am.

I relly hope you find your little guy real soon.

Hopefullyl they're much better at sneaking in the wild. She knocked 4 other cages off shelves before she tried to climb a floor lamp and she and the lamp falling to the floor is what woke me up.

If you can't find him, start taking apart appliances...washer, dryer, look under the refrigerator...inside of the couch or recliner...inside speakers that have ports...inside of a printer or computer is a possiblity...I had a 9 foot carpet python escape once...you would think he would be easy to find...but he found a hole no bigger than a 50 cent piece next to the dishwasher...and that's where I found him....

Good luck, Chris

My husband has pulled out the frig for me to look behind it and I looked underneath it too. I crawled around the kitchen with the flashlight, nothing. I tore apart the couch and loveseat, looked in closets, the bathroom and bedroom. I have yet to look in the walkin closet. What if I tried a rat in a small container with a hole just big enough for him to crawl in in every room tonight because I know he is hungry.Do you think that will work? Thank you for your help so far.

idk, you can try it. i would also get thouse smell inhansers. you put it on the rat, and the smell is really strong, but atrcts the snake

Usually when I find a lost snake it's by accident or because the snake was too big to not be found. I haven't had an escape in a long time.

Try putting baking powder or some other kind of powdery stuff along each doorway so if the snake moves from one room to another there will be proof in the powder.

I've also heard having a fresh killed gerbil and dragging it around a little and putting it by a hide box with heat works well.

Good Luck!

Got 'em! I had the rat and container setup with the Mouse maker in the kitchen where his cage is. I just walked out to the kitchen to check on the rat and my boa was coming up on the container. He didn't move or get skiddish, he was intent on the rat. It's a good thing I walked out there, he would of never fit through the hole in the container. I don't even know the size of my snake, lol.

Thank you everyone for your help. I'm glad there is a forum to help me with this perdictment. The rat in the container works!

ohhh, im so happy for you. thank God!!!!!!!!! well congrats, and i glad you cought him. did you atleast let him keep the rat? lol

Lizard-lady May 21, 2004 11:12 PM

Yes, I'm so happy I got him back. Actually I put the rat in his cage then him. But he didn't give me a chance to get him all the way in the the cage. He grabbed the rat and constricted around it and me at the same time. So I had a rat bracelet. I waited until he killed the rat then I unwound him from me. At first he didn't start swallowing the rat. I was afraid I disturbed him and he wouldn't eat. But after a minute or two he proceeded to swallow it. I'm still amazed he can eat a rat. I'm so used to small Kingsnakes and Hognoses eating fuzzies, this is new to me. Thank you again everyone for your help and support.
