New pics of a new color...............

FroggieB May 21, 2004 02:08 PM

I've been trying to get some good shots of this lady for a while but her color just doesn't seem to show in the photos. I think this is the best I've gotten to date so I'm gonna show her off.

This is a youngster that I wasn't sure was even going to make it as she was showing severe signs of calcium deficiency but she has straightened up for the most part is feisty and eats like a pig now.

Anyway, when she gets excited or when she is feeding, I guess that's about the same thing, her horns, crest, eyebrow ridge and mouth turn red. Sometimes she will turn almost black with the red highlights. I had heard that some red animals came in back in the 70's and now I am wondering if this is what they were or if they were redder than this.

So, here she is!

Actually she is a lamb! She eats like a lion though. Can't seem to just take a nightcrawler or silkworm, it's more like she grabs, yanks, and shakes then swallows! Aside from that she's a real sweetie. She isn't very big either. Due to the calcium deficiency I don't know if she will ever reach full growth or not. I just had to keep her due to her colors!

One of the 4 I have for sale right now is so striking I wish I was keeping her. She is green for the most part but has the most brilliant orange on her chest that I have ever seen. Since this so often fades with age I never though too much about it before but now that she is 9 months old it is spreading. She has blotches of orange on her legs and her crest and horns are bright orange too! I think I'm gonna have to raise one of my clutches to this age again so I can take the pick of the colors! LOL!

Hey Marcia, very nice!!! I love that frontal shot, looks like the devil or something very sinister from that angle. The colors are very nice. I totally recommend keeping the colorful or high spikey picks of the litter and introducing these to your blood lines w/o inbreeding of course. Great job, im still using/recommending rep-cal after having non success with some other calcium supplements that have caused slight mbd even when raised in sunshine!!!!

Those are very pretty! I saw a mountain lizard at a petco a few months ago. He was cool looking too. I was reading some about them. Like they need a 3x4 foot cage since they like to climb. How are they as far as care wise? Do they need heating, lighting, etc? I have snakes but was looking into getting some type of lizard.
I haven't seen one since the one I saw at the petco. I read most are WC. Where could I get a CB one? Do you breed them? Even at reptile shows I've never seen one.
How much do they cost to buy one? I have a 40 gallon breeder tank. Would that be ok for a mountain tree dragon? Thanks for any answers.

Hello Marcia:
I remember the red Mtn. Horns of the seventies. They were a much smaller species than these giants we are seeing today. They were easily 2" shorter and built very much like A. armata. They were a rusty(reddish-brown) color over most of the body. At that time most of the Asian lizards were brought in from Thailand and I think that's where the little "rusty" ones originated from though I'm not 100% sure. (It has been over thirty years).
Love the pics of your girl, a really nice-looking animal. I was looking at a similar pair today that I might get next week. The male was real funny as he kept trying to climb up my arm to the highest perch (on top of my head). He was persistent. They both had good body weight and were being soaked when I saw them. This made them extra perky due to the high humidity.
Have a Great Day!!!
