My ball

dan_binderup May 21, 2004 03:30 PM

Hey
I wrote earlier concerning keeping balls i rubbermaids. this time I just want to show my new addition. As said in a earlier post I was given this snake because the owner didn't cared for it properly. It is pretty skinny, I measured it today and it is 37,5 inches (95cm.) and it weighted 700G. I know it is on the skinny side, but I have already got it to eat F/T. the previous owner said that it only would take live prey, so I am fairly happy about that.
I do have one more question (probably not the last).
how old do you think this snake is? and what should a snake this length weigh under ideal conditions?
hope to hear from some of you soon.
here is a couple of pic.

That looks like a good girth for that snake. I think he/she is just fine in that dept.

As far as how old the snake is? Thats is anyones guess. I have been keeping monthly records on 20 neonates for almost a year now. The largest yearling is 800 grams, the smallest is 250 grams. Just like people they are very vairiable in how and when they grow.

Here are the average charts I keep~

its hard to tell underweight from a picture. It is also extremely hard to tell age. I took in a 7 year old male about 4 feet that was a little on the skinny side and after some feeding...it shed twice in the first month of feeding and was going into another shortly after than month. For a snake that big and old it would not shed that much so my only guess was that is was making up for lost time missing meals : )

I have to agree that your snake does look the right weight for size not under or over weight as for age who knows. When dealing with adoptees it is anyones guess if they don't tell you themselves. I just took in two males one 10 yrs one 12 yrs old. Recoil at 10 yrs old weighs only 916g and is about 4 ft or so and Whiplash at 12 yrs was only 1140g and again 4 1/2 ft or so, I have not gotten a good measure on length yet. Neither of them look skinny but they weigh less than your average 3 yr old!!! They were also fed live mice, the owner would throw 4 - 5 live mice into the enclosure these two snakes shared and who ever ate them ate them!! I have had them for 3 weeks now and they are eating FT rats no problem and quickly gaining weight.
