Horned Frog Heat...

solacegreen May 21, 2004 04:57 PM

Hey I just bought a cranwell's pacman and i was wondering...i heard they like to be warmer (around 80?), what is the best way to heat them? I have undertank heating pads and various heat lamps from old pets. i prefer the heating pads because my cat has knocked over my heat lamps before but i'm worried that the frog will burrow too close to the heatpad and dry out. Maybe a low wattage dayglo bulb?...i'm sorta new to frogs so any advice from seasoned horned frog keepers would be quite groovy.

P.S. My horned frog Maynard is a mean little (big) bastard...
he almost bit my finger off a couple times i think to him my juicy finger looks more appitizing than all the crickets, worms, mice i've been giving him.

Well the wattage of the bulb would depend on the size of the tank.Under tank heater in my opinion are no good they barely raise air temps and in the wild horned frogs burrow to escape heat and instead they will be burrowing into more heat.As for your cat they usually mean trouble I suggest moving the tank to an area you can keep the cat out of.Cats for some odd reason( they are evil lol ) like to play with reptiles.

thx thats what i thought. will a 60 watt bulb work for a 10 gallon tank?..heh and my cat only comes into my room with my reptiles when i'm there but he's sneaky..."HEY GET OFF OF THERE!"....."MEOW! HISS!".... CRASH!..... "DAMN CAT SCREW OFF!!!"

Okay, I have a question here. Why are we trying to heat a frog that does well in the mid 70s F? Unless your cage temps are going to go down below 70 F I am very doubtful that heating has any real place in for these frogs. C. ornata is the most southerly ranging of this genus and will do well in the 70s (as will cranwelli). In general I would recommend saving your money and just feeding the frog a little less often unless the room temps are colder than the mid 70s F. They do not need to be kept at 80F.
(for a reference see The General Care and Maintenance of Horned Frogs, de Vosjoli).
