Seasonal Temperature changes

zhiv9 Jun 17, 2003 03:30 PM

Hi I was wondering what you guys generally do to compensate for summer heat. I find the cool side of my enclosure creeping into the low eighties and don't want to overheat my juvenile hognose. Do you just shut your basking lamp off till the temperatures drop?

Thanks for any help

First off, I don't use basking lamps with any snakes. I use undertank heaters/heat tape controlled by a rheostat for all my animals. It is a more "natural" heat source for them (snakes get heat mostly by basking on warm surfaces, not by basking in the sun).
If it is too warm, turn off the light. They don't need/appreciate it anyway as long as there is some natural light allowing them to maintain a fairly normal circadian pattern.
