Help! My Leopard Only Wants Romaine!!!!

kheyden May 21, 2004 06:40 PM

I have a appx. 6 mnth. old leopard tortoise. I try to feed him a diet of mixed greens of kale, collard greens, mustard greens and a minimal amount of romaine. The problem is he will pick out the romaine and not eat anything else. This is the diet I was told by the breeder to feed it. If i do not put any romiane he will not eat and if i put just romaine he will eat it all. My concern is I heard it is not to good to feed this type of tortoise too much romaine. Is that true? I soak him once a day and he perks up when i put him in the water. Otherwise he kind of just sits around and doesn't do much. Is this normal? If anyone can help I would really appreciate it. The tortoise is a beautiful animal and I don't want to lose him. P.S. I keep the tank at about mid 70's (75 to 78) coolside and basking side 90-95. Thanks

Try and find some dandelion greens and milk thistle and plantain from around the neighborhood. See if that works.
When you do feed the romaine, feed the darkest parts you can find. Also try the packaged 'Spring Mix'. Another thing to try is to hold back the romaine. Also, try green leaf, Red leaf, endive, again, feeding the darkest part of the plant.
See if that helps. Finally, when you feed a limited diet like this, add a pinch of supplement. T-Rex has come out with a tortoise supplement that seems pretty good.

I use dried weeds and sift them into a good dust then wet some romaine and mix the dust and calcium on it.It clings good and my leapord has no problem with it.
