1st N.America true CB cycled, bred & hatching of Yellow Saharans

douglasdix Jun 17, 2003 03:43 PM

Greetings all. Well we finally hatched out 7 Yellow Saharan (aka: Niger) Uro’s last week. This is the first production of true Captive cycled, bred and hatched Yellow Saharans in North America. We also hatched our first Red Saharan the week before which is only the second N.A. true captive breeding of that species. (Note this isn’t an “ad” to try to sell any as these are already spoken for. I just wanted to pass on the breeding as we’ve really been hoping to successfully produce this species).

On another note, we are asked all the time about whether or not Uro’s will double clutch. We have heard stories of some supposedly double clutching over the years but upon further investigation, these have always turned out to be females dumping retained eggs from the original clutch. We commonly get breedings after a clutch is laid, but never any eggs to show for it. However yesterday, we had a female yellow Saharan actually produce a legitimate second clutch. I don’t have her data in front of me but her first clutch of approx. 14 fertile eggs was laid over 2 months ago. Then yesterday she laid 7 more obviously new eggs, nice and bright and fertile. They were slightly smaller than the first clutch (about 5.7 grams average verses almost 7 grams each for the first clutch), and half as many, but otherwise nice eggs. Upon looking at a few of our other females, it looks like we have one more Yellow Saharan working on a second clutch. We still have one Somali (U. mcfadyeni) to lay, other wise out laying season is about over and the bulk of our babies are due out in the next few weeks.

Hope all is going well for everyone!

Congratulations Doug!

It is so great that you have produced the first cb yellow saharans. With the condition that so many wc are in upon arrival in this country and the way the poor things are treated for import it is very important that captive breeding starts to be more successful. I know you have worked long and hard to have this happen. Again, congratulations, and I wish you much success in all your future breeding attempts. I'm sure you will never have any trouble selling these or any other babies you produce!
